For Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, I wanted to share how we’re continuing to approach representation.
We can now create custom 3D-modeled limbs that more closely reflect an individual’s lived experience. When one of our existing options isn’t suitable, customers can share reference photos and we’ll model and print a limb specifically for them.
Up until now, our options have been limited to an upper-arm (above-elbow) limb difference mold, prosthetic parts, and in some cases, custom builds by leaving limb sockets untrimmed. While this allowed for some flexibility, it was never an ideal or truly representative solution.
These custom limbs are made possible through our collaboration with Resione, who are developing resin materials matched to Smart Doll skin tones - helping us achieve not just the right form, but also a closer match in color and surface finish.
Because each piece is modeled individually, custom builds may take a little longer. For those who need it, the modeling and printing will be included as part of the Smart Doll at no extra cost.
Just like the Smart Doll Wheelchair 3D files we released for free on our website, we’ll also be releasing these limb designs so folks can customize them, or resize and adapt them for other brands. This is something we feel should be available to the wider community.
In these photos, you’ll see some of the examples we’ve created so far, including a shoulder-level limb difference and an above-knee limb difference.
